I love the Indian cuisine with all its seasonings, spices and odors. It always feels like a little trip to another country if the smell of curry, coconut and fresh ginger is going through my house. Besides Palak Tofu Paneer one of my favourite dish is a good red lentil dal. I came up with this dish as I had some pre-cooked lentils in my fridge the other day and started to stir together some leftover ingredients. Well, here we go – new recipe for the blog was born! Hope you enjoy it!

  •  1 tbsp vegetable oil
  •  1 red onion, finely minced
  •  2 cloves garlic, microplaned (or using a garlic press)
  •  1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
  •  2 tsp curry powder
  •  1/2 tsp turmeric
  •  1/2 tsp garam masala
  •  1/4 tsp cilantro powder
  •  1 tsp kala namak (or sea salt)
  •  1 tbsp vegetable broth powder
  •  1/2 cup water
  •  1 cup coconut milk ( + 1 tbsp to garnish)
  •  1½ cups red (or yellow) lentils, pre-cooked

  1. First of all, in a skillet heat the oil on medium heat
  2. Add onions, garlic, ginger and brown for 1 minute
  3. Season with curry powder, turmeric, garam masala, cilantro powder, kala namak and vegetable broth powder
  4. Deglaze with water and stir until everything is well combined
  5. Add the coconut milk, stir and cook for another 2 minutes
  6. Finally, add the lentils and fold into the thick creamy gravy
  7. Serve in a deep dish plate and garnish with some more coconut milk

You can serve the easy vegan red lentil dal over rice, eat it with naan bread or roti. For the lazy version heat up some soft tortilla wraps, cut into slices and dip into the red lentil dal.

If you don’t have pre-cooked lentils the overall cooking time will not extend dramatically (max. 10 minutes). I recommend to cook the lentils in a rice cooker (1 cup lentils / 2 cups water) while you are following the recipe for the sauce. The lentils are ready if you you are done with the gravy base.

Thank you! Glad you like it!
Kala Namak is a must for Indian dishes – at least for me 🙂
It’s a bit empty without you! Miss you too!
